Meet Rachel

Rachel went looking for physical activity and found a new life through the United Studios of Self Defense (USSD). She has been developing herself physically, as well as emotionally and spiritually.

A friend invited Rachel to come to the dojo (place of learning) with her to a class. The USSD encourages guests to participate in classes prior to joining. Rachel was impressed with the hands on instruction by the sensei (teacher). Students were challenged to become better by participating in private lessons as well as group activities.

Although she has always loved physical activity, Rachel realized that she would need to go out of her comfort zone to join. Now, after spending hours learning, practicing, and competing, she is ready to step up to the level of teaching. Her confidence in her own abilities has increased tremendously in all areas of her life. She has found that the physical activity sharpens her mind and elevates her mood, as well as helping her get into shape!

Sharpen Your Mind

Rachel has found that when she is physically active and focusing on that activity, her mind sharpens in its ability to problem solve. The emotion of the moment gives way as the mind concentrates on the task at hand. Things that are happening in the world around are put into perspective and dealt with more effectively when the physical activity is completed.

The USSD student manual teaches a code of conduct and the life skills that are the basic principals of the art. These apply not only to the martial arts activities at the dojo, but life in general. Effort, etiquette, sincerity, self control, and character are developed within a controlled environment, then put to the test during competition.

Outside the dojo, Rachel finds that doing something physical facilitates the problem solving process. Examples include drawing pictures that represent parts of the problem, writing down the steps, walking through the actions, and talking to someone. Each time physical activity is paired with mental effort during problem solving, the goal is accomplished with greater ease.

Increase Mood Stabilizers

Physical activity, whether martial arts, walking around a track, or riding a bike, releases in the brain the chemicals called endorphins, mood altering nerve impulses that flood the body with good feelings. Known to decrease depression, anxiety, stress, and tension, the body's own chemical response to physical activity is more economical and effective than any artificial drug, alcohol, or addicitive manmade substance.

Becoming involved with the dojo on a regular basis, Rachel found that her moods were more stable. She was less prone to bouts of anger and discouragement. She grew to like herself better, became more out-going, and started enjoying life more.

Rachel wants everyone to know that increased physical activity may not be easy, but it is worth it. She found new ambition and the motivation to live a high quality lifestyle through her involvement in USSD. Martial arts may not be for everyone, but with effort and time, each person can find an activity that works for them. The results of feeling better about yourself, having a stronger mind, and a physically fit body, are well worth the sacrifice.
